One of the most important parts of a strong workplace culture is the manager-employee relationship. As the dictum goes, “People leave managers, not jobs,” which means that encouraging a good manager-relationship is vital not just for the employee’s day-to-day, but also for the company’s future when it comes to retaining star employees. One-on-ones (or 1:1s, as they’re sometimes known) are generally free flowing discussions between a manager and their direct report about work– specifically, on the employee’s progress, workload, and development at the company. “The key to a good one-on-one meeting is the understanding that it is the employee’s meeting rather than the manager’s meeting. This is the free-form meeting for all the pressing issues, brilliant ideas and chronic frustrations that do not fit neatly into status reports, email and other less personal and intimate mechanisms.”
But it can be hard to balance having a conversation about work that doesn’t devolve into just a status update about your work. One moment you’re talking about the difficulty of one project, the next moment you’re actively working on the project — thus robbing your employee of the opportunity to learn how to correct the problem themselves.
