What is AI Fluency?

AI fluency is the ability to productively and responsibly use AI tools while implementing human judgment appropriately.

At Lattice, we believe that AI fluency is not measured by a person’s frequency of AI usage or number of AI tools used. AI fluency requires understanding the limitations of AI, applying critical thinking to the inputs and outputs of different AI tools, and knowing how to leverage it to augment one’s own impact, productivity, and capability. 

Why You Need an AI Fluency Framework

An AI fluency framework sets expectations how AI should be used by employees. It defines how AI fluency connects to employee development and performance. It solidifies specific skills that every employee should either have or be working toward and clarifies how those skills are meant to grow or change as employees move up the ladder.

For example, Lattice’s AI Fluency Framework outlines specific competencies for managers, including “work review,” where good management is defined by “reviewing the team's work to spot patterns and coaching opportunities, not taking a direct report’s work, dropping it into AI, and handing back AI feedback as their own.” Because if an employee wanted AI feedback, they could have achieved that themselves, with their own AI fluency. 

A framework helps HR teams define what’s expected and rewarded, and centralizes the information in a place where employees, managers, and company leaders have equal access to and understanding of the expectations.
